Message: Hi smaddies! I am an Interactive Media grad from May '08. Yes, there is life after JMU, and contrary to popular belief it's not that bad. You'd be surprised how quickly you can get used to a fat paycheck every two weeks! After hiking around Europe for a month I landed a job fairly quickly here in Herndon, VA and I am enjoying it quite a bit. I am the graphic designer/front-end developer here at SemanticBits, designing the interface of several web applications that we build for hospitals doing cancer trials. So in a way, you could say, my job is to help cure cancer! It is a small company (only about 30 people) so there is a lot of opportunity for creativity, which I like. :-) Anyway, the real reason I am posting is we are looking for a technical writer to join our team. If you're interested in writing for web applications, shoot me an email! We need someone to write our documentation including technical manuals and user guides, as well as presentations and web content. If this sounds like you, hit me up at david.coffey@semanticbits.com I'm talking to you CC and PJ majors! I'll send you more info and will get you in touch with my boss who's looking to hire ASAP! Until then, live it up! Peace.

Message: Hey everyone! I am a May 2008 grad from the Interactive Media program, and I am currently working at EF (www.ef.com) as a Front-End Web Developer up in Boston. I LOVE MY JOB! It's a very young, fun company, and it provides great opportunities for travel. I just started working here in September, and I already had my first business trip to Toronto to work with our Canada division. Being that we are a travel/cultural exchange company, we have offices all over the world. The work is challenging but of course very rewarding, and we have a great network of people here. The office has an open floor plan, which I thought was a huge plus for someone trying to avoid the cubicle :) I never thought that I'd enjoy coming to work as much as I do with this job. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions--or even just to let me know you'll be up in the Boston area. I know it can be tough to find jobs outside of Virginia/DC area, so I am happy to answer any questions or help with the job search! My email: kirsten.mcglone@ef.com www.ef.com www.eftours.com Cheers, Kirsten McGlone '08

Message: Hellooooo, SMAD! Five months out, and I have already moved to Tennessee to do web and graphics work, as well as mingle in the really fun community they have here. Unfortunately I still have yet to meet up with the JMU Alumni Nashville Chapter, but I hope to do that soon! It's been rough finding an office job, so I decided to start working for myself and created my own little freelance web/graphics business! My biggest client at the moment is NYC fashion guru Amy Salinger (I'm her webmaster at www.amysalinger.net), which has been a really positive experience and full of opportunities to grow. I really do love setting my own hours (which gives me plenty of time to work on my novel, heehee), but I am still keeping my eyes peeled for a more solid foundational job (or freelance jobs). Much love to all!

Employer: MPRI/Army.mil
Message: I just wanted to echo what the fabulous Kristin Andrews said about working for MPRI on the Army.mil contract. It is amazing getting to use SMAD skills (I was corporate communications and am now on the content team here, working video, refreshing content, copy editing, and becoming our unofficial social media expert - meaning I get to play on YouTube and Twitter all day :)) to serve a better purpose. I get to interact with our Soldiers every day, which is a humble reminder of how hard their jobs are, and how lucky I am to have mine. And YOU are in luck - because our team is expanding! Go to https://app.mpri.com/IIF/jobs/jobsummary_LocationDesc.html (Scroll down to the positions available at Virginia (Crystal City) Added on 2008-10-01) to check out our newest positions. Our team is growing, the site is on the cutting edge of public affairs with five million unique visitors a month, and may I remind you in a questionble economy that the government is the biggest and most consistent spender? Of course you would also get to work with fabulous alumni. Please feel free to email me with any questions, cover letters, or resumes!

I absolutely love working in the city, Boston is an amazing place to be. I'm actually getting an apartment soon to shorten my commute (it's currently about 2 hours each way!). Message: Hi everyone! I'm in the Raleigh/Durham area now and would love to hear from any local SMAD alums. Jonathan and I celebrated our first anniversary this year and I'm working for CAP doing a variety of things, mostly production assistant work. It's a small, family owned company and I couldn't be happier here. Most of our books are law based, so I'm recognizing a lot of terms from Mass Communication Law, who knew?! Working for the newspaper back in Virginia was fun, but I feel like I've found a much better fit with the work I'm doing here. Despite my Print Journalism background, they're letting me venture into the world of web design (thanks to SMAD!!!) I'm looking to do some freelance print design work and would love any tips and advice you all might have. If you're ever in the area, shoot me an e-mail!

I'm currently an account executive at Hirshorn Zuckerman Design Group. We are a 90 person company in Rockville who produces some really outstanding creative work for a variety of clients. I would describe it as an ad agency focusing on high end real estate among others. The work environment is great with a relaxed dress, code, talented folks, and good leadership. It's night and day from my previous position but it feels good to get experience in the commercial world. Employer: Pragmatics
Message: Hello! It seems like just yesterday I was roaming the SMAD hallways, who would believe I would have ended up with a good company in only a few months time. Now, I’m working for a company called Pragmatics and living in downtown Arlington, VA. Well, let’s face it; it’s not the “perfect” job, many entry level jobs rarely are a perfect match to anyone’s carrier plans. After, poking around the job market for the past few months that fact became painfully clear. However, it’s about as good as anyone could ever hope to ask for coming right out of college. It’s also one of those perfect “get your foot in the door” type of opportunities with great benefits and long term possibilities. I’m also earning good money and living only seven blocks away from the office in a high rise, so gas prices aren’t affecting me that horribly.

Anyway, I’m writing in to let you know that the company I’m working for is looking to hire another entry-level position with the same skill set I have (eg, an IM major), for the project we are currently working on for the FDIC. Believe me when I say you don’t want to let this one slip by! The work attire is business casual (a golf shirt and dress pants are fine), the people are nice and did I forget to mention the money (50k +)?

More details can be found on the company’s employment opportunities page under job code: 0777.

Here is a direct link to the opportunities page: http://tbe.taleo.net/NA8/ats/careers/requisition.jsp?org=PRAGMATICS&cws=1&rid=98

The company’s website: http://www.pragmatics.com/index.jsp

If anyone is interested they can apply using that web page as well as send an email to me at: cpostak@fdic.gov. I gained so much from my time at JMU and now an opportunity has arisen where I now can offer one of my fellow SMADies a chance at a great gob here in DC. This position does need to be filled ASAP so anyone interested should act right away before it becomes filled.

Sincerely,
Chris Postak

Employer: Dixon Davis Media Group
Message: WOW! my first alumni post. 2 years out of SMAD I am now the director of Media Services here at Dixon Davis Media Group. It is a big responsibility being a part of a democratic consulting firm. I am in charge of all production and post production. Which means I do everything from crew a shoot, to organizing voice talent, to getting the final "spot" to the station. I am mostly posting because I need a few new short term employees here at the office and a fellow JMU alum would be welcomed. The first position we are looking to hire is an elements gatherer. We need someone who is organized and wants a good first job for understanding workflow. They would be in charge of logging tapes and organizing shoot elements. They would be working at Henninger Media services in Arlington, Va. The second position we are looking to hire is a traffic director. This person would be working directly with me helping to get the final 30 seconds spots to the stations with DG. He would have to be very organized and want to learn about managing creative people. They would be working in Georgetown part of DC Send me an e-mail with your resume. thank you!

Message: Hello all! I have been waiting for a good time to post on here, but there is no time like the present, right? I am still involved with photography, doing some freelance work and picking up some wedding gigs here and there. However, for the past year my heart has been set to do law enforcement and I am currently in the application process for an agency in northern Virginia. I am very excited and I have learned so much already from my law enforcement friends. A lot has changed in my life the past seven months and I look forward to what the new few years have to offer for me! To all fellow photographers: If anyone is interested in doing photography for a wedding in April 2009, please send me an email and we'll talk! Since I'm in the wedding party, I can't do the photography myself...although that would be interesting to see.

Employer: Avalon Management/Avalon Television
Message: Hi All! So after nearly a year away from JMU, I finally feel worthy of posting on the Alumni Message Board. I graduated last year as a DV-Producing and Directing concentration, and quickly packed up and moved to Los Angeles to try to make it in Hollywood. Since September I've been working at a company called Avalon. Avalon is a huge management and TV production company in the UK, and I work for the LA office, where we do quite well also. We manage comedians (if you are wondering what a Manager does think "E" in "Entourage"), and some of our big clients right now include Paul F. Tompkins (Best Week Ever), Kristen Schaal (Flight of the Conchords), John Oliver (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart), and Greg Behrendt (He's Just Not That Into You). There is also a lot going on on the TV side of the business as well, but this post is getting long so I won't get into it. Anyway, we have 2 8-week internships available for this summer, May-June and then July-August. Internship are unpaid, but we offer credit and a great educational experience. PLEASE shoot me an email if you think you might be interested or if you just want to talk about LA. Good luck to the '08 graduates! Enjoy your last few weeks.

Message: Hi. I graduated in May with a SMAD degree in Print Journalism, a little burnt-out with the writing thing. So, I'm currently working as an assistant superintendant at Bayville Golf Club in Virginia Beach where I manage a 265+ acre area. The club is paying for my masters degree from Virginia Tech (there's an extension center here at the Beach) which will be in horticulture. It's cool to learn new things, and I'm surprised how interested I am in it. Botony is verrrry different from journalism and science has never really been my forte. Additionally, I got back into music and served as the woodwind instructor for Bayside High School's marching band this past fall. They didn't pay me much, but refamiliarizing myself with music (after having played flute, oboe and percussion for nearly 12 years and abandoning it all upon coming to JMU) was totally worth it. Once I start loving to write again, I'll be dabbling my fingers in some free-lance work.

Message: Hey! Now that I'm pretty settled, I decided it's about time to post a message. I got in to NBC Page Program last November after a few interview stages and some waiting. It's been great so far, I'm really enjoying it. My primary duties are to give NBC studio tours here at 30 Rock and also usher shows. However just my luck, the day I started was the day the WGA went on strike! So none of the shows have been taping. In the program, you apply to and work on different assignments for different NBC shows such as Today, Late Night, SNL, MSNBC, CNBC etc... Right now I'm on assignment at what's called the "News Nook" where we have 4 small one camera studios where mostly CNBC and MSNBC talent come by and do 15-30min live feeds. I sit at the front desk and schedule the studios, also deal with the talent that comes by, prep them for their live feed and help out in the control room as well. It's pretty hands on, I'm meeting a lot of people and learning a lot. I'm also on the same floor as Conan O'Brien's studio so I see that tall guy with the red hair almost every day which is pretty cool. This assignment'll last another 7-8 weeks, then it's back to touring and applying for new assignments (SNL would be awesome!). I'm living with two SMAD alum, Alex Graber and Erik Pitzer in an apartment in the East Village and we have exposed brick so life is pretty good! I would recommend the program to everyone, shoot me an email if you're thinking of coming to New York and you're interested in the page program!
