| Date Posted: December 28, 2010 Name: Dan Drinkard Year Graduated: 2004 Location: Arlington, VA 22204 USA Email Address: dan.drinkard+smad@gmail.com Employer: Washington Post Message: Hey all, Wanted to post an opportunity at The Post -- we're hiring an interactive producer for the Interactivity desk in our DC headquarters. You'd be working on tools to help increase the depth of the site, mostly centered around user-generated content. This position is somewhat technical and somewhat editorial, so if you're competent with HTML, CSS and JS but really love journalism, this is probably right up your alley. If you're interested, send me an email at dan [dot] drinkard [at] gmail.com. Happy new year! |
| Date Posted: December 2, 2010 Name: Pierce Hodges Year Graduated: 2008 Location: Portland, OR Email Address: hodgespc@gmail.com Employer: Mt. Hood Meadows Resort Message: What’s up SMAD!? It’s been an amazing few years since graduation, which I’ve spent flying fighter jets (www.redbullfirstperson.com) coaching downhill mountain biking, ski (snowboard) patrolling, racing in triathlons, and surfing while doing video projects on the side. This year I finally got a “real job”. I am now the Mountain Communications Team Leader at Mt Hood Meadows Resort outside of Portland Oregon. I am the chief videographer and video editor for the mountain, mostly doing videos for the website, events, and marketing department. This involves a lot of video editing, snowboarding with helmet cameras, chasing other riders over cliffs etc and getting great video of it! To offer some advice to SMAD students: Pursue your passions. New jobs are being created in the media field all the time. You’re bound to find something you love. Network!! Get names, get contact info, and don’t hesitate to put yourself out there. I found the number online for the Marketing Director for Mt Hood, and cold called about this position, which was only just in the process of being created, and now it’s my full time dream job! Also, Work on your demo reel. Make sure it contains some work that you’re really proud of. This usually involves sinking a lot of time into it, and it’s well worth it! As the season progresses look at skihood.com to see some of my projects. Feel free to contact me any time if you have any questions!!! Rock on SMAD!!!!! |

| Date Posted: November 17, 2010 Name: Heather Phillips Year Graduated: 2010 Location: Chesapeake, VA 23325 Usa Email Address: Phillihn@gmail.com Employer: TCI Message: Hey SMADies! I miss the Harrison basement like no other! I can't stress enough the importance of being hooked in to social media. Especially twitter. It might seem stupid but it helps me do my job everyday! You'd be surprised how easy it is to reach out to industry professionals on twitter and get real time responses. Setting up a detailed profile and adding a resume to sites like career builder and monster helps too. I get emails almost every other week with position offers. That's why I'm writing this message. I got a call today from someone looking for a user experience designer with web and mobile development skills in Pittsburg. Its full time with benefits. If you're interested in more details email me at phillihn@gmail.com. Don't forget to check out what SMAD club is up to and get involved. Have a great Thanksgiving break Heather |

I posted here a few years ago, but I wanted to give an update! First off, my name is Christina, and I have a degree in Interactive Media with a minor in art. I moved to Franklin, TN (about a half hour outside of Nashville) the summer after graduation, and for my first two years here I did web and graphics freelance, which was an amazing experience. Thanks to one of those jobs, this May I got a "real" job (benefits and all!!!) at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, a minority university, in the Meharry Translational Research Center (MeTRC) Biomedical Informatics core, doing web & graphic designs for grant sites. It's actually pretty awesome, because we're focused on research, and the sites I'm working on endeavor to help researchers and the community. It's extra rewarding when you do a job you love that helps others :) If you're thinking of getting into bio informatics or just want more info about Nashville, or how SMAD and JMU prepared me for the real world, just drop me an email at sunlitnook.solutions@gmail.com! Check out my website too: http://www.sunlitnook.com. GO DUKES!!! |
| Date Posted: November 1, 2010 Name: Katie Sheridan Year Graduated: 2006 Location: Fairfax, VA 22033 Email Address: katietsheridan@gmail.com Employer: WJLA Washington DC Message: Hi Everyone, I recently got hired by ABC 7's WJLA/TBD (previously Channel 8 News). It was a lucky find after having taken a 2-year break from the field to join the Peace Corps. But as Woody says, Do what you love! And it'll all work out. I'm currently working as a video editor for WJLA's in-house commercial production department, and I'm loving it! Prior to working here, I had been doing several months of freelance work, including editing for a multimedia boutique, Vision Creative, based in Alexandria, VA. They mainly produce video for live events and seminars. They are looking for an editor for some long-term freelance work, that could potentially turn into a permanent position. The guys are awesome to work for, and as long as you are reasonably versed in FCP you should be qualified. Feel free to shoot me an email if you or anyone you know is interested. All the best! |
| Date Posted: October 20, 2010 Name: Ben Bowman Year Graduated: 2009 Location: Mt. Crawford, VA 22841 USA Email Address: citben123@gmail.com Employer: Power Monitors Inc. Message: Hey this is Ben, I graduated from SMAD with a degree in Interactive Media in 2009. I was jobless for about six months after graduation, and eventually had to get a job at Wal-Mart. While at Wal-Mart I continued to practice my programming skills and after about two months I landed an interview at Power Monitors Inc. (PMI) in Mt. Crawford, Va. At the interview I showed the lead programmers a game that I had made in Flash, and they were so impressed that PMI hired me the next day. I am now a web developer at the company. If I had to give a new or soon to be graduate advice it would be to not give up! Just keep practicing your skills and eventually something will work out. More specific advice for someone interested in becoming a web developer / web-master is to become proficient in an object oriented language. Some good languages to study are Java, JavaScript, and of course ActionScript 3! |
| Date Posted: September 24, 2010 Name: Jay Cooper Year Graduated: 1993 Location: San Francisco, CA Email Address: jcooper@ilm.com Employer: Industrial Light + Magic Message: Hey peeps. I was a mass comm minor in the early 90's. Nice to check out the stuff everyone is up to. I thought I'd give a long overdue update. I've been working in the film business for about 15+ years. I've been working in visual effects for most of them. I'm currently a supervisor at ILM. This is my 12th year working for the greater Lucas empire. This year, I worked on my 30th feature film. You've seen my work, if you've seen any blockbuster film from the last decade, most recently Avatar and Star Trek. Its a fun and challenging business. If any JMU peeps are in the bay area, you can give me a holler for the dime tour.. |
| Date Posted: September 14, 2010 Name: Stephanie Day Davis Year Graduated: 1994 Location: Hardy, VA 24101 Email Address: davisfamilyof4@netscape.com Employer: Franklin County Public Schools Message: Just found your website and wanted say hello as a Mass Comm graduate from the 90's. Out of college, I worked as a Production Assistant at ABC affiliate WRIC-TV8 in Richmond for a couple of years. I enjoyed working in all aspects of live, local newscast production. I then moved to Norfolk to work at another ABC affiliate, WVEC-TV13. I eventually was promoted to Director and I really enjoyed my time there. Working in TV is fun and I loved the adrenaline rush of directing a live newscast! But eventually I got tired of the evenings and weekends and wanted to start a family. I earned a Master's in Elementary Education from the University of Virginia and now I am teaching 3rd Grade at my children's school. Hi to Marilou, Dr. George Johnson, Dr. Turner, and Dr. O'Conner. I learned so much from you and remember your classes well. I am hoping at least one of my children will choose JMU. |
| Date Posted: September 13, 2010 Name: Ed Connors Year Graduated: 1977 Location: Washington, DC 20036 USA Email Address: econnors@prospect.org Employer: The American Prospect Message: Hello Everyone. This site stirs memories of my staining the pages of The Breeze with my weekly column during the 1976-77 year. The highlight of that time was my leaving a column entitled, "In Praise of Procrastination" in the office box and skipping town for a Springsteen concert in DC. I have recently taken the position of Advertising Manager with The American Prospect and Prospect.org. This comes after spending more than ten years in radio journalism including a stint as the House of Representatives Correspondent for the old UPI Radio Network. Now I am on the other side of the fence working the business side and helping the magazine evolve into the digital world. Please feel free to email me if you have any comments or questions about things here in Washington. All the best. Ed |

| Date Posted: August 14, 2010 Name: Scott Graham Year Graduated: 2009 Location: Richmond, VA 23235 Email Address: scott@scottwgraham.com Employer: Metro Productions Message: Hey, SMAD!! It's been a little over a year since graduation, so I wanted to give an update and a few bits of advice. I've been with Metro Productions since June 2009. I began as an Assistant Editor (logging tapes, capturing footage, managing tape library, etc.), and was recently promoted to Associate Editor. Metro produces a lot of corporate marketing and training videos, but we also run the Jumbo Trons for JMU and the University of Richmond. I've had nothing but fun since I moved to Richmond to work with Metro. Now for the advice. 1. One thing I've learned since graduation is how important it is to show your passion for what you do. You can spend the whole interview talking about it, but unless your resume contains projects you worked on outside of class, your passion won't show. There are any number of ways to start an outside project. Several companies in Harrisonburg, including Telemedia Productions and Digico, have JMU students for interns. These are great resume builders and opportunities to expand your skills. Sidenote - Metro Productions employs students to work on the video crew for JMU football games. If you're interested, talk to John Hodges. If none of those appeal to you, talk to a local business about making a video, website, ad, or whatever for them. Do it for free if necessary. 2. If you want to learn more about a media-related topic, check out www.lynda.com. Subscriptions only cost $25/month, and you have access to online training on everything Adobe, Final Cut Suite, Avid Media Composer (what we use at Metro), Pro Tools, and everything else you can dream of knowing. I also use www.creativecow.com and www.videocopilot.com (After Effects tutorials). If you're more of a book person, I've had good luck with anything published by O'Reilly. 3. Have fun. There is nothing better in life than spending 8 (or more) hours a day NOT being miserable. I have friends who are half as happy for twice the pay. I don't envy them, even if I have to keep a close eye on my spending. 4. NETWORK!!! This one is the most important. Especially when the job market is tough, companies don't post their jobs. They ask their existing employees who they would recommend. That is how I got my job, and that is how a recent SMAD grad got the job to fill my old position. Start random conversations with people, join LinkedIn (I've received several freelance opportunities from this), keep in contact with people, and CARRY BUSINESS CARDS WITH YOU EVERYWHERE. Lots of sites offer free business cards. That's it. I hope I was helpful, and I wish you all a great year ahead. Happy creating! |
| Date Posted: July 19, 2010 Name: Mallory Micetich Year Graduated: 2009 Location: Arlington, VA 22203 United States Email Address: mallory.micetich@mail.house.gov Employer: Representative Ken Calvert, CA-44 Message: Hello fellow SMAD-ers; I just wanted to give a quick update on my life post JMU, and post an opportunity for any Print Journalism students looking for freelance work in the D.C. area. After graduating, I started working for a small media company that produces work for government contractors. I started as a graphic designer and also did some writing. In March, I decided to stop working there and chase my dream of working for a congressman. After an amazing internship for a senator; I was hired as a staff assistant for a congressman from California. He is a great boss and I really feel like this is where I want to be for the next few years. The old company that I used to work for produces a magazine and they are looking for a few freelance writers. The person must be in the Washington D.C. area and know A.P. style. Specifically they need someone to write a 1200-1500 word article on "Navigating the Recompete." We will provide sources to contact, etc. Article would be due in mid-August. A recompete is when a company with a contract had to re-bid on the work they are doing following the end of the contract. The article would be paid and is an amazing opportunity to conduct interviews, get experience and produce a published clip. Please email me if you are interested or know anyone that might be. They are looking for someone ASAP!! Thanks and if you ever need a Cap Tour let me know! Mallory Micetich |

In addition, we create tools that our sales people can use to instill confidence in their customers. The police were clearly out of line when they raided the offices of The Breeze in order to seize photos of the April 10 riot that occurred off campus. "To intimidate student journalists with a massive show of force and with no time to consult legal counsel is grossly improper," Executive Director of the Student Press Law Center Frank LoMonte said. http://www.roanoke.com/news/roanoke/wb/243790 |

| Date Posted: March 19, 2010 Name: Jill Moore Year Graduated: 2009 Location: Virginia Beach, VA Email Address: jlmoore@wgnttv.com Employer: The CW Message: After graduation I spent months & months searching, applying, and interviewing for jobs all up and down the East Coast but I finally landed one! I've been working for the local CW television station in the Hampton Roads area since January and I love it! I'm the Web Editor for our site as well as our affiliates in Tampa and Atlanta. My job is primarily focused on promoting our shows, creating advertisements for clients, and developing strategies to enhance web traffic for our site. I feel very lucky to be using my degree just as I'd hoped when I signed up freshman year. Working for a television station is very exciting and since the local CW stations are owned by CBS, it is a great start for a career in the entertainment industry. Please feel free to visit the site at CW27.com! I should also note that our station has three JMU grads now that I'm here! Us Dukes are slowly but surely taking over the building and would love to add on =) In efforts to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, I came on this site and stumbled across a post by Jen (now my co-worker) talking about her job here at CW27. I e-mailed her to ask for advice and to please keep me in mind if any jobs opened up at the station and the next thing I knew I was headed South in a U-Haul! So, I can thank this message board for a great opportunity for networking and hope that my message gives another SMAD alum a positive outlook on the job search! Don't give up because you never know what/when/where/who will be the turning point! Good luck Dukes! I hope the undergrads enjoy it while it lasts & don't be in a hurry to graduate... I miss JMU so much and can't wait to come back and visit :) |

I am currently working for a local TV station in Colorado owned by Vail Resorts. I'm mainly a videographer, but I do a lot of in-studio work and the occasional b-roll editing. Prior to this position, I interned on a short movie shot in Maryland over last summer. I'm really proud to share that "Hushed" (in which I am credited as 1st AC) has been accepted into the Short Film Corner at this years Cannes Film Festival. Yes, that Cannes. I did the majority of camera work, and if you want to see the trailer, it's viewable here: http://www.youtube.com/twomanisland#p/a/u/0/pM61BWAP6ig. Sorry Professor Woody, I won't be wearing all black and going to Sundance this year. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone in SMAD for all their help getting me to where I am. Also, TV8 is hiring a new Station Manager and probably some interns this summer, so interested parties should feel free to e-mail me and/or check out www.skijob1.com |
