SMAD Alumni/Professional Advisory Council Scholarships Campaign

Thanks to the leadership of Dean Leipsner (chair) and members of the SMAD Alumni/Professional Advisory Council, four new scholarship funds are being established to provide financial help to students in the School of Media Arts & Design. One new endowed scholarship and three new annual scholarship funds have been created. Endowed Scholarships

Endowed scholarships provide a permanent ever-increasing source of income for scholarships. It will benefit students now and well into the future. The capital is held in perpetuity and invested. A portion of the interest earned is invested as well. As the fund grows, so does its yield for students. Once a minimum of $25,000 is raised, a portion of the interest earned is given to students in the form of scholarships.

SMAD Alumni/Professional Advisory Council ENDOWED Scholarships

Funds raised under this account go toward creating endowed schoarships for SMAD students. Once the scholarship endowment is fully endowed at $25,000, it will provide funds annually for one or more students in the School of Media Arts & Design. The scholarships will be awarded to students in a manner determined at the discretion of the director of the School of Media Arts & Design in consultation with the Alumni/Professional Advisory Council. To be eligible for these scholarships, a student must demonstrate a need for financial aid as determined by the university's Office for Financial Aid and Scholarships.

Annual Scholarships

Annual scholarships provide the most immediate support for students. Although it will not create the long-term support of an endowment, the entire amount of your gift is directed to students over the short-term.

SMAD Alumni/Professional Advisory Council ANNUAL Scholarships

The scholarships will be awarded to students in a manner determined at the discretion of the director of the School of Media Arts & Design in consultation with the Alumni/Professional Advisory Council. To be eligible for these scholarships, a student must demonstrate a need for financial aid as determined by the university's Office for Financial Aid and Scholarships. Beginning with the 2011-2012 academic year, two students will each receive scholarships in the amount of $2,500.

Charles Turner Scholarships

The Charles Turner Scholarships honor professor Charles Turner, an emeritus professor of the School of Media Arts & Design. They were established through the work of the SMAD Alumni/Professional Advisory Council. The scholarships are given to a SMAD major who has shown academic achievement and promise in cinema studies or media studies. To be eligible for these scholarships, a student must demonstrate a need for financial aid as determined by the university's Office for Financial Aid and Scholarships. Two students will each receive a scholarship in the amount of $2,500. The first scholarships will be awarded during the spring 2011 semester with payout to students beginning in the 2011-2012 academic year.

John Woody Scholarships

The John Woody Scholarships honor professor John Woody, an emeritus professor of the School of Media Arts & Design. They were established through the work of the SMAD Alumni/Professional Advisory Council. The scholarships are given to a rising senior Digital Video & Cinema concentrator. Awards are based on commitment to excellent media production. Applicants are nominated by faculty teaching in the concentration are are based on prior productions while a SMAD major. Applicants are expected to have a minimum 2.75 overall grade point average. Typically, students must have completed or be currently enrolled in SMAD 302. The selection committee may also consider evidence of commitment to the profession, including additional media production activities such as internships, practica or other media related work. The selection committee may interview finalists for the awards. To be eligible for these scholarships, a student must demonstrate a need for financial aid as determined by the university's Office for Financial Aid and Scholarships. Two students will each receive a scholarship in the amount of $2,500. The first scholarships will be awarded during the spring 2011 semester with payout to students beginning in the 2011-2012 academic year.

How to Give
Donors can give to SMAD via check, credit card or bank transfer. Donations can be accepted either online or by filling out a donor card and sending it to the JMU "Advanced Gifts & Records" office.

Donors can simply fill out the online form found here. (Use Option 1. Online)

Under the Gift Information section (see example below), indicate your desired designation by selecting Other (Specify below) in the "My gift will support" field. Then, enter the SMAD fund number & name in the "Other or Additional Gift Information" field. Gifts can be made via credit card or check. All checks should be made out to: JMU Foundation.
