John Guiniven earned his Ph.D. in Mass Communication from the University of Maryland and previously was on the faculties at the University of Nebraska and Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communication. 

He is an accredited member of the International Association of Business Communicators and the Public Relations Society of America, as well as a member of the PRSA College of Fellows. 

His professional experience includes press secretary to Sen. Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia, Director of Internal Communication and Public Issues at International Paper Company, and Director of Corporate Public Relations for Chrysler. 

His articles have appeared in leading academic and professional journals, and he writes the monthly “Ask the Professor” column in PR Tactics.
