JMU Student Newspaper Wins Advertising Honors

James Madison University's student newspaper received two honors at the recent Southern University Newspapers convention.
SUN, a newspaper advertising association with 21 southern student newspapers as members, awarded JMU's The Breeze with both a second and third place in the Special Section category. The second-place award was for Madison 101, a magazine-style publication introducing new students to life at the university and in the surrounding area. Madison 101 is a joint project between The Breeze and a magazine-production class in the School of Media Arts and Design. Executive Editors Katie O'Dowd and Kara Rodemer led the project, while Ad Manager Meghan O'Donnell coordinated ad sales. SMAD professors Dietrich Maune and David Wendelken and SMAD adjunct instructor Toni Mehling advised the editorial content. Breeze Publication Coordinator Brad Jenkins and Advertising Adviser Lindsey Shantz advised the advertising staff.
The third-place award was for The Breeze's holiday shopping guide, published in November 2006.
Four students attended SUN's annual conference in Raleigh, N.C., for several days during the last week of September. SUN distributed the honors during an evening awards banquet.
"Students who work on Breeze projects gain real-world experience, and it's a nice honor when they are recognized for their work," said Jenkins, who manages Breeze operations.
The Breeze is published twice weekly during the academic year. Some 9,500 copies are distributed on and off campus.
