From Dr. Marilou Johnson, Associate Dean, College of Visual and Performing Arts

It is my pleasure to inform you that Dr. Dolores Flamiano, Associate Professor in Media Arts and Design, has been selected to receive a summer stipend from the National Endowment for the Humanities for 2009. Her stipend has been designated a "We the People" project and is being supported in part by funds the agency has set aside for this special initiative that encourages the teaching, study and understanding of American history and culture. Her project is titled "A Good Picture is Hard to Kill: Hansel Mieth and Social Reform Photojournalism, 1934-1949."

Each fall the Faculty Assistance Committees in CAL and CVPA put out a call for proposals to be submitted to the National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipend program. A subcommittee made up of representatives from each of these committees reviews the proposals and selects the ones to be nominated by the university. For a number of years, I have acted on behalf of the university to authorize the nominations. This is at least the second time that a JMU proposal has received an award.

Congratulations to Dolores!
