HARRISONBURG - JMU senior Patrick Stinnett spent his summer interning at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.
As a SMAD Interactive Media major, he began his internship search in the winter of last year. Knowing that he wanted to expand on his skills in web design, he came across an internship opportunity at the Kennedy Center.

Washington D.C. was an ideal location for Stinnett, a Lynchburg, Va. native. “I found an apartment to sublet on Craigslist that was only four blocks from the Kennedy Center, so I could walk to work,” says Stinnett.
Stinnett’s SMAD skills came into play frequently over the course of his internship. He was the only intern on the Kennedy Center’s five-person web development team. He made flash mock-ups for the website covering events like the Kennedy Center’s JAPAN! Culture + hyperculture Festival. Stinnett also gained experience with digital video, streaming concerts onto the web.
Through his internship, Stinnett was able to work hands on in his field. Developing directly for the web at the Kennedy Center helped him build on the skills he had already obtained in his SMAD classes.
Although the web department at the Kennedy Center is small, they do a lot of networking, going to conferences, etc. “I think that my references at the Kennedy Center will help me later on,” says Stinnett.
After graduation, Stinnett does not want to limit himself to working only in Washington D.C. Wherever he chooses to go, Stinnett’s experience at the Kennedy Center definitely helped prepare him for a career in web design.
