As the Mexico City bureau chief for Cox Newspapers, she covered a broad range of issues, including immigration, free trade, drug trafficking, and civil conflict in Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. In earlier years, while based in Managua, Nicaragua, she covered regional civil conflicts, including the Nicaraguan war, for leading U.S. publications, including the Washington Post, the Boston Globe, and the St. Petersburg Times. She also has worked as a freelance magazine writer for U.S. and European magazines, and as the editor for New Jersey’s largest general interest magazine, New Jersey Monthly.
Her academic research has developed from her professional experience. Her interests are the relationship between media and democracy, particularly in the developing world, and the impact of globalization, including global media, on social movements. Most recently, she has been focused on indigenous organizations in Mexico and their use of the Internet in political actvisim
