This all-day event includes careers sessions for each concentration, as well as sessions on resume reviews and interviewing tips and porfolio reviews. Led by SMAD alumni and other working professionals, these sessions are important in developing networking connections that may one day lead to internships or jobs. Plus, you'll get to hear from industry insiders about what it takes to prepare for and succeed in your first job.
This year, we'll have a special session with representatives from The Martin Agency, SMAD Dogs (hot dogs) and a double-feature movie screening of two fims produced by SMAD alumni.

The Martin Agency Panel
Our special session this year is a group from The Martin Agency in Richmond. The firm's clients include some of the biggest brands in the world, including Pizza Hut, Comcast, GEICO, Hanes, Morgan Stanley, and Walmart. Contributing to their success are a large number of SMAD graduates who work in roles across SMAD’s four concentrations. Come learn how SMAD graduates landed their jobs at The Martin Agency and what they do today in roles such as account management, design, production, social media, strategic planning and corporate communications. A recruiter from the company will be on hand. Bring your resumes and be ready to talk to these important industry insiders after the panel has ended.
SMAD Dogs and Ethics Poker
Join SMAD Club and the Society of Professional Journalists for food (hot dogs, chips, cookies) and a game of “Ethics Hold ‘em Poker”! Students, faculty, and alumni are welcome to enjoy hot dogs and drinks while participating in a poker tournament where players use customized decks of cards with tenets of SPJ’s Code of Ethics printed on the face of each card.
SMAD Movie Night
Join us for two first-look screenings of movies produced by SMAD alumni and meet the filmmakers. The Hornet's Nest tells the story of career journalist Mike Boettcher as he takes his sone to the war zone in Afghanistan to cover U.S. combat troops on the front lines. The second feature is The Bystander Theory. After inheriting a home from a recently deceased grandfather she never knew, Liz Jennings travels to the small Texas town of Brockmeyer. Soon after she arrives, Liz receives a surprise visit from a popular Austin conspiracy radio show host named Seamus “Shame” Fuller. Shame informs Liz that he has reason to believe her grandfather may have been involved in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
